What is globalisation doing to us?
( a wake-up call to those blind male fashion enthusiasts out there )

10 years ago, you hop onto the train and you could see commuters carrying Deuter haversacks, or school children having those white/black/green Outdoor bags strapped tightly onto their well-pressed school uniforms, most often reminding you of the Ninja Turtles. While walking in Orchard road, an MCM bag hangs on any rich tai-tai's arms which you will rarely come across. The sparsity of such bags in the community showed that many Singaporeans were not that obsessed with labels then.

Nowadays, on the MRT train, you can see in almost every carriage that people are carrying the Louis Vuitton Monogram Canvas bags, or in recent years, the up-and-coming Gucci canvas bags with the G logos which look like jelly beans being uniformly smashed onto the bags. Initially I thought Gucci or LV have been organizing numerous sales, but a walk in the Taka flagship store last week proved me wrong. Instead of having a sale, their products were more expensive than what I saw in the past.

It's like, if people carry branded goods just to display their financial status, what's there to show off now? Every Tom, Dick or Harry can afford a Gucci or LV nowadays, so what's so special about your monogram canvas? Does it glow in the dark? If you really love to show off, why not hang a fully monogrammed LV flag at the window during August?

What's so nice with letters all over the bag? LV LV LV LV ? CCCCCCC ? GGGGGGG ??

You love alphabets? Go and buy one with 'ABC' all over lah!

I feel that Singaporeans nowadays want to have what others are having. They never pause to see if the product really looks good on them. To be frank, I had and I loved the LV monogram in the past, but now when I imagine myself carrying such stuff, I look like any Chao Ah Beng or the aunty at the market. A monogram wallet is still tolerable, but the messenger bags? Once I saw a decent looking guy with such a bag draped across his shoulders, for a moment, I thought he was gay. Sometimes I wonder when these people eat, do they even taste the food they are eating. It's like literally eating shit.

Come on man, surely when you buy clothes, you would have checked to see if the design looks good on you mah. A bag can cover almost half your body, why not see if it complements your dressing first before you buy it leh? I think monogram suits the female species better. But guys, you ought to find something more classic instead!

Pertaining to the materials one should look out for when selecting a bag, I think those people who own the leather ones have made a smarter choice. Those carrying the canvas kind which are already commonplace, what's the point in trying to protect the canvas with your life when it rains? Why make yourself suffer because your bag behaves like a nappy? I really empathize with them, or rather, sympathize with their judgement skills when purchasing a branded item.

Perhaps it's not for me to judge the mass. In any case, I'm just disgusted at so many LV and Gucci stuff that I am starting to feel irked at the sight of these monograms. I wonder out loud if there would be one day, when someone would wear a dress with the words 'LV' printed all over.

Gosh, why am I so mean.

Yo I wonder wat happened to spark your tirade over the designer labels. Agree LV and Gucci is overflowing the streets. I happen to own both and I'm not so impressed w the increase in pple carrying them. But half of those on the streets r fake!

Anyway, juz switch brands like hermes or bottega la. But then again it's ironical, because when u use such high end brands, nobody knows that it's even designer, and u defeat the purpose of displaying the exclusivity.

End of day up to individual la...
